BREAST SPECIFIC GAMMA IMAGING EXPLAINED AT WOMEN’S DIGITAL IMAGING OPEN HOUSE
[Ridgewood Patch]
October 23 — Women's Digital Imaging of Ridgewood helped raise awareness this month with its open house October 22. Specializing in breast imaging, Dr. Lisa Weinstock aims to “introduce and educate both physicians and the public about breast specific gamma imaging,” an up and coming technology that helps in the identification and diagnosis of breast cancer.
BSGI technology is new to the public and was incorporated at Women’s Digital Imaging in May. It is a fully digital machine that has many benefits to female patients. In helping trace abnormal cells, BSGI is comparable to an MRI, but has a few distinct differences. It uses molecular imaging of the breast tissue on a cellular level versus an anatomical level like the MRI. Also, it helps find early cancers and has fewer false positives, a benefit that speaks for itself. The patient remains seated during the procedure without any compression of the breast. The compact and open machine prevents any claustrophobic tendencies common with an MRI machine. Not only is the machine comfortable during the process, but it is also more comfortable on your wallet. For about a fourth of the cost of an MRI you can get a more specific reading that can differentiate between cells.
Weinstock explained that not all women can easily get an MRI. Patients sometimes find that they have to already be diagnosed with breast abnormalities, or be preapproved by their insurance companies. Women Digital Imaging helps with insurance submissions and it has found a high success rate with returns.
BSGI is a valuable tool for women who are high risk due to family history, or are newly diagnosed. It is also beneficial for those with dense breast tissue (which often does not read well with other technologies), post surgery patients, and women with breast implants.
It is important to be aware the BSGI and MRI readings do not replace regular examinations, but are methods that follow a diagnosis. “Be your own advocate,” Weinstock said. It is important to be healthy with diet and exercise, perform self-exams, and always have an annual mammogram after the age of 35. She also said that stress is never healthy. “Don’t bury your head in the sand. Get tested – don’t avoid your exam because the longer you wait the more stressful it can seem.”
Now is the time to relax and lay to rest your uncertainties. Be your own advocate and promote good health for yourself and your family.
